Mass Effect Pack

The Mass Effect Pack is one of my proudest contributions to Cards Against Humanity. I initiated and maintained our relationship with AAA video game studio BioWare, negotiated our licensing contract, and coordinated the printing and shipping of the product. I also directed the art on the packaging, hired the illustrator, and wrote most of the cards. It is my weird little alien baby and I am so happy with the response we got for it. I also got to give a bunch of interviews.

Writing the Cards

Writing the Cards

We met with BioWare folks at SDCC in 2015 hoping that we could convince them to let us play Mass Effect: Andromeda early. They did not let us do that. But that night after a bottle of wine, Cards Against Humanity Community Director Jenn Bane and I spent the evening writing cards for a co-branded pack. It's a good thing we kept our notes, because we ended up using most of the writing from that evening of wine and silliness.

I chose illustrator of Over the Garden Wall and BioWare fan artist Cara McGee to create the packaging art, and I am so glad I did. She was a joy to work with, and because of her familiarity with the subject, was really able to communicate the tone of the pack while staying true to the source material.

Make the Men Kiss

Make the Men Kiss

Mass Effect is a science fiction third-person shooter series of video games, but mostly, it is about kissing people. When we decided that the packaging would be similar to a booklet, I had an exciting opportunity to incorporate a smooch into the art. Here we see Events Manager Tom demonstrating how to make Commander Shepard kiss one of his many boyfriends, Kaidan Alenko. This delighted people, and was one of the most commented upon features of the pack of cards.

I'm really proud of how well we were able to be silly the Mass Effect audience without making them feel as though we aimed to dunk on them.
